Assumptions
Last week's blog mentioned some common elements observed in communities that are makin efforts to engage community members from diverse backgrounds. One of those common elements was to make no assumptions.
Most people would probably agree that misinformation and stereotypes lead to assumptions, which interferes in relationship building with people different from “us”. Assumptions lead to making a judgment about a person based on a group he or she belongs to. The opportunity to learn about the person as an individual is lost. The self worth of the person is discounted. In making assumptions about those who are different, we also lose the chance to enrich our learning.
It is our responsibility, especially in our work, to learn and promote accurate information about the different cultural groups in our community. It requires you to be persistent in the quest for accurate information. Listening is an important skill in opening up for meaningful conversations with individuals from divers groups. Overcoming assumptions is a process. It takes courage and persistence to stay on the course.
Opportunities to actively experience other cultures abound in our state. Events can make the learning process fun. Take yourself beyond your comfort zone in the upcoming months and participate in cultural events that are likely to provide hand on experiences. Information about where to go is only a keystroke away.
September has a number of opportunities to start your journey. There is
Ramadan: August 10 - September 09
Rosh Hashanah: September 09 & 10
Hispanic Heritage Month: September 15 – October 15
Michigan Indian Week: September 20 – 26
What have you got to lose? Assumptions!
