Maternal Depression and Early Childhood Report May 2011

In Minnesota it is estimated that one in 10 babies each year is born to a mother experiencing serious depression during his or her first year of life. This represented nearly 14,000 mothers and infants in 2009. Every untreated case of maternal depression in Minnesota is estimated to cost society at a minimum $23,000 per year in terms of lost productivity for both mother and child.
