May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are in the unique position of being combined in one group due to the small numbers in Michigan. Asia Americans have their origins from the Far East, Southeast Asia, or the subcontinent of India. Pacific Islanders have their origins in Hawaii, Guam, Samoa and other Pacific Islands. This group includes forty-eight distinct categories as reported in a research report titled, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders Facts, Not Fiction: Setting the Record Straight. You will find this report at http://professionals.collegeboard.com/profdownload/08-0608-AAPI.pdf.
The Asian American/Pacific Islander Heritage Week was established as a weeklong event in October, 1978 by President Jimmy Carter. In May, 1990, President George H.W. Bush expanded and proclaimed the month of May as the Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.
