The importance of diversity

We often hear that diversity is important in our work.

Have you stopped to ponder why? I have given it some thought and have more to ponder. I believe that reflecting on the value of diversity is a first step in opening up for personal growth. It provides an opportunity to learn in a very different way than how one has learned in the past.

As a parent, I see the value of teaching children at a young age to accept differences in others. In the process of learning to accept others, we become open and learn to adapt to circumstances, peoples and places. And the ability to be open helps us see other people beyond their culture and languag

And why is it important to foster a sense of diversity in children?

  • To prepare them for a new and different world of various cultures, habits, value systems.
  • To provide them with the learning and education that will give them the opportunity to excel.
  • To provide them with necessary skills as they become world citizens.

Today’s young children will grow in a global community. Chances are greater that young children of today will not work with a homogenous group.   They will be more likely to travel to different parts of the world for employment and will be expected to know how to adapt to new settings. Adjustment will be minimal because they will be used to a diverse group of people.

Through the work that we are doing today and the engagement of diverse communities, we are promoting children’s learning about the best of all cultures and lead to their success. For these reasons and more, I find diversity important in our work.
