Change and early childhood
In reflection of the past 12 months it has astounded me the amount of innovation and change we have experienced in Michigan. This inlcudes Early Head Start and Head Start expansion, a reduction in GSRP funding, a small increase in GSRP funing, development of the Great Start Regional Resource Centers, Great Start Connect, transition of the T.E.A.C.H. scholarship program to MiAEYC, staff transition from key roles, and many other changes I have not identified.
Change is one subject that you could spend days if not weeks learning how to cope with, prepare for, and alters practice and still feel as lost when you face the change directly. This goes for both change that is perceived as positive and negative in that both require a change in mind set, planning, preparation and implementation all while dealing with emotions.
Early childhood is a field that is laced with emotion, connection, and results tied to how we best serve children and families in Michigan. This year will bring the opportunity for more changes in Michigan and to the early childhood field, and the question that stands before us now is how we educate others on the need for change or lack of change. In the end as individuals, organizations, and as system we must think about how to prepare and react positively with any changes that lie ahead.
